Former President Donald Trump is set to speak in Pennsylvania, 200 miles away from where an attempt was made on his life earlier this month. Security experts believe that security measures will be increased due to the scrutiny the Secret Service is facing and the potential for copycat killers. Former State Department special agent Kevin Maloy expressed concern about the possibility of copycat shooters, as the would-be assassin received significant attention for his actions. Former SWAT commander Gene Petrino also pointed out that recent attacks would heighten security risks and responses.

In the weeks leading up to John F. Kennedy Jr.’s assassination, there were thwarted assassination plots against him in Chicago and Miami. The Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center in Harrisburg, where Trump is scheduled to speak, will be secured by a joint effort involving Pennsylvania State Police, Capitol Police, and the local Harrisburg Police Department. Maloy noted that while indoor venues may seem easier to secure, the potential size of the crowd could pose visibility concerns. Security sweeps of the stadium have been conducted or are ongoing to identify potential security vulnerabilities.

Security expert Gene Petrino expects to see increased security measures at Trump’s rally, likely including drones providing aerial coverage, multiple sniper teams, K-9 units, and more distance between Trump and the crowd. Maloy emphasized the importance of securing Trump’s arrival and departure, mentioning that these moments are particularly vulnerable. He suggested using alternative entrances or exits, or obscuring vision with a tent if necessary. Inside the venue, Maloy highlighted areas such as catwalks, balconies, and boxed seating as potential vantage points for a shooter that should be controlled.

Maloy stated that the Secret Service’s response in Butler may have been due to incompetence or complacency but has seen lessons learned from the incident. He acknowledged that the Secret Service’s pride was impacted by the incident and that they are a professional agency overall. An evacuation strategy will be in place for Trump, with a motorcade ready to assist in case of another assassination attempt. The Secret Service is working to determine whether the failure in Butler was due to individual incompetence or systemic issues. The agency is striving to prevent future security lapses and protect the former president effectively.
