Houseplants can add life and vibrancy to a space, but without proper care, they can easily die. In order to keep houseplants thriving, it is important to learn how to care for them, including where to place them and how much to water them. Some plants are easier to care for than others, and some are nearly impossible to kill. Plant experts Rebecca Sterling and Puneet Sabharwal provided recommendations for plants that are hard to kill and easy to care for.

The ZZ plant is popular for its low maintenance and ability to tolerate neglect. It features thick, leathery leaves and rhizomes that store water, making it tolerant to underwatering. Parlor palms are great for beginners because they are forgiving and thrive in humid environments. Monstera plants are resilient due to their ability to adapt to various conditions, including low light and low water availability. Hoyas are long-lasting plants that can last for decades and are resistant to low humidity.

Aglaonema Siam Pink plants are hardy and can tolerate a wide range of conditions, including low light environments. Pothos plants are indestructible and can tolerate drought, low light, and neglect. Snake plants are known for their ability to tolerate both low-light and direct sunlight conditions. Baby rubber plants have semisucculent properties, allowing them to store moisture in their fleshy stems or leaves. Heart-leaf philodendrons thrive in bright indirect light and can tolerate low light conditions.

The No. 1 reason houseplants die is overwatering, according to plant experts Sabharwal and Sterling. To prevent overwatering, it is important to use pots with drainage holes and water plants generously until water trickles out the bottom. EasyPlant’s self-watering pot system can help prevent overwatering. Another common mistake that leads to plant death is not providing enough light. Many people think that low light is sufficient for plants to thrive, but most tropical houseplants still require a consistent light source to grow properly.
