Taiwan-based Andrews Film has acquired international sales rights to the drama film “Daughter’s Daughter” ahead of its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Directed by Huang Xi and executive produced by Hou Hsiao-hsien and Sylvia Chang, the film follows the journey of a 60-year-old woman who discovers she is responsible for her deceased daughter’s IVF embryo and must confront the daughter she had as a teenager. The film explores past regrets, future responsibilities, and the complexities of reproduction within the LGBT community.
The film, produced by Sun Lok Productions and supported by TAICCA, has already secured its first sale to Hong Kong’s Edko Film. Starring Sylvia Chang, Karena Lam, and Eugenie Liu, with supporting cast members including Alannah Ong, Winston Chow, and Tracy Chou, “Daughter’s Daughter” delves into themes of family, loss, and identity. Director Huang is known for his work on contemporary urban relationships and previously collaborated with Hou on the film “Goodbye South, Goodbye.”
In addition to “Daughter’s Daughter,” Huang has also worked on the TV series “Twisted Strings” for HBO, which explores the themes of death and desire. The legalization of gay marriage in Taiwan in 2019 has opened up discussions on issues beyond marriage, such as IVF and reproduction, which the film aims to address. The film’s production team includes talented individuals such as cinematographer Yao Hung-I, editor Liao Ching-Sung, and production designer Hwarng Wern-ying.
