Alamo Drafthouse is honoring legendary director Spike Lee with the dedication of its newly renovated downtown Brooklyn theater. The ceremony, scheduled for September 12, will feature a screening of Lee’s semi-autobiographical film “Crooklyn” and a live Q&A with the director. The event will also unveil a plaque naming the theater the Spike Lee Cinema in recognition of his contributions to the film industry and his impact on Brooklyn culture.

The dedication of the Spike Lee Cinema coincides with the completion of the theater’s upgrade and expansion. Originally opened in 2016 with seven screens, Alamo Drafthouse has added five new auditoriums equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including laser projectors and 3D capabilities. The auditoriums also feature premium leather recliners and personal swivel tables for in-seat food and drink options, making it a favorite destination for cinephiles in Brooklyn.

Alamo Drafthouse CEO Michael Kustermann expressed the company’s pride in dedicating the renovated theater to Spike Lee, whose films have defined Brooklyn for generations. In addition to screening Lee’s films as part of a retrospective programming series, the Spike Lee Cinema will continue to offer a diverse mix of first-run films, classics, and signature events. The programming series will include screenings of Lee’s iconic works such as “Mo’ Better Blues,” “Jungle Fever,” “Do the Right Thing,” “Clockers,” and “Inside Man.”

The dedication of the Spike Lee Cinema is a recognition of the director’s contribution to film culture and his influence on the city of Brooklyn. From his nuanced portrayals of Brooklyn life in films like “Do the Right Thing” and “Crooklyn” to his towering portrait of Malcolm X, Spike Lee’s vision has left an indelible mark on the industry and the community. The dedication ceremony will honor Lee’s legacy and celebrate his impact on both film and the city of New York.

Attendees of the private event on September 12 will witness the unveiling of the Spike Lee Cinema plaque, which will officially rename the Alamo Drafthouse theater in Brooklyn. The dedication is a fitting tribute to Lee’s groundbreaking work and his significance in representing the cultural fabric of Brooklyn. The event will be a special celebration of Spike Lee’s contributions to cinema and his enduring legacy in the world of film.

In addition to the dedication ceremony and screening of “Crooklyn,” the Spike Lee Cinema will host a series of screenings of Lee’s films, offering audiences the opportunity to revisit his work and celebrate his impact on the industry. As one of the most influential and iconic filmmakers of his generation, Spike Lee’s contributions to cinema will be celebrated and honored at the newly dedicated Alamo Drafthouse theater in downtown Brooklyn.
