Former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele expressed frustration with Republicans’ claims of the 2020 election being stolen from Donald Trump. Despite no evidence to support such claims, Trump repeatedly alleged fraud in Joe Biden’s election victory. Trump, who is now the 2024 GOP presidential nominee, refused to acknowledge losing the 2020 election during a presidential debate with Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. Facing federal and state charges in Georgia for attempting to overturn election results, Trump maintains his innocence and calls the cases politically motivated.

Steele, known for his criticism of Trump, questioned how Republicans could claim fraud in the presidential election while being elected themselves on the same ballot. He highlighted the 147 Republicans who tried to overturn the election results on January 6, 2021, leading to a riot at the U.S. Capitol. Notable names among those who objected to the results include Mike Johnson, Steve Scalise, and Elise Stefanik in the House, and Tommy Tuberville, Rick Scott, and Ted Cruz in the Senate. Steele expressed frustration with the lack of logical consistency in the claims of election fraud.

In reaction to a clip showing Trump’s statement in Georgia, Steele argued that fair and free elections are ensured by the redundancies in the system. He criticized Trump’s refusal to acknowledge the legitimacy of the election results and urged Republicans to stop buying into his claims of fraud. Steele was joined by lawyer George Conway, a vocal Trump critic who created the Anti-Psychopath PAC against the former president. The two discussed the lack of evidence supporting Trump’s claims and the inconsistency in alleging fraud in the presidential election while accepting election results for other candidates on the same ballot.

Trump’s refusal to acknowledge the outcome of the 2020 election has led to ongoing division within the Republican Party. Many members continue to support Trump’s claims of election fraud, while others like Steele and Conway criticize the lack of evidence. Biden, in his first White House press briefing as president, expressed confidence in the upcoming election being free and fair but noted concerns about potential unrest given Trump’s past statements. The ongoing debate over the legitimacy of the 2020 election results highlights the deep political divisions in the country following Trump’s loss.
