ESPN host Pat McAfee apologized for using a derogatory term towards WNBA rookie Caitlin Clark, calling her a “White b*tch” during a segment on his show. McAfee clarified that his intent was complimentary and apologized for his choice of words. He also sent a direct apology to Clark for the comment, which came during a discussion about whether race played a factor in Clark’s rise to popularity in the WNBA.

During the segment on his show, McAfee argued that Clark alone was responsible for the WNBA’s surge in popularity, citing her dominant television ratings, ticket sales, and jersey sales. He disputed claims that her popularity was due to her race, emphasizing her talent and achievements in Iowa’s basketball program. Despite his admiration for Clark, his use of the derogatory term and focus on race drew backlash from some ESPN staffers, who criticized his comments as unacceptable and inappropriate.

This incident is not the first time McAfee has caused controversy at ESPN. Earlier in the year, he faced backlash for allowing Aaron Rodgers to make baseless claims on his show. McAfee also targeted former ESPN executive Norby Williamson, accusing him of sabotage and calling him a “rat.” Williamson ultimately left the network after these accusations from McAfee, adding to the host’s history of stirring up trouble.

While McAfee’s praise for Clark was evident, the use of the derogatory term overshadowed his admiration for her talent and contributions to the WNBA. The incident sparked criticism from ESPN analysts and reporters, as well as others in the sports media industry. Despite the backlash, ESPN declined to comment on the matter, and the Indiana Fever team did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Clark, who was named the WNBA Rookie of the Month for May, has been making waves in the league with her impressive performance on the court. In 11 games, she has averaged 15.6 points, 6.4 assists, and 5.1 rebounds, solidifying her status as a rising star in the WNBA. McAfee’s comments, while controversial, have not diminished Clark’s achievements or impact on the league, as she continues to excel and gain recognition for her skills and dedication to the sport.
