Elle Macpherson, a well-known supermodel, has recently opened up about being a breast cancer survivor after keeping her diagnosis a secret for seven years. She was diagnosed with HER2-positive estrogen receptive intraductal carcinoma, also known as stage 0 breast cancer, after a lumpectomy. Despite recommendations for aggressive treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, and mastectomy, Macpherson chose to pursue a holistic and intuitive approach to her treatment. This decision was in line with her belief in holistic medicine and listening to her inner sense.

After consulting with 32 doctors and experts, Macpherson opted out of traditional treatments like chemotherapy and focused on a comprehensive healing approach centered around integrative medicine. She spent eight months in Phoenix, Arizona under the care of a primary doctor specializing in integrative medicine, as well as various other holistic practitioners. Despite facing criticism for her decision to reject conventional treatment, Macpherson remained true to her beliefs and focused on what felt right for her. She describes her healing journey as a time of intense focus and dedication to self-care.

Intraductal carcinoma, also known as ductal carcinoma in situ, is a non-invasive form of breast cancer that accounts for about 20% of new diagnoses. While DCIS has the potential to progress to invasive cancer, almost all women with this stage 0 condition can be cured. Treatment typically involves breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy, followed by radiation therapy. HER2-positive cancers, like Macpherson’s, often require targeted drugs that focus on the protein. Hormone therapy may also be part of the treatment plan for hormone receptor-positive cancers.

Macpherson’s decision to pursue a holistic approach to her cancer treatment was met with mixed reactions from those around her. While one of her sons was supportive, the other was not comfortable with her choice. Despite facing criticism and skepticism, Macpherson remained steadfast in her belief that there was no one “right” way to approach cancer treatment and focused on what felt right for her. She acknowledges that declining standard medical solutions was one of the hardest decisions she has ever made but felt it was the best choice for her individual journey.

As a breast cancer survivor, Macpherson is currently in remission, with all tests and scans coming back clear. Her healing journey involved a combination of various holistic and integrative medical treatments, as well as a deep commitment to self-care and well-being. While her decision to forego traditional treatment paths was unconventional, Macpherson’s story underscores the importance of listening to one’s intuition and finding a treatment plan that aligns with personal beliefs and values. Her experience serves as a reminder that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to cancer treatment and that individuals should feel empowered to make decisions that resonate with them personally.
