Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary in Tennessee is dedicated to providing a loving and comfortable home for senior dogs over the age of 10, some with unique medical conditions. Founded in 2012 by Zina and Michael Goodin, the sanctuary also helps foster out older dogs and cover their vet bills through events like the Geezer Gala Senior Prom. This event featured tutu and bowtie-clad pups crowned as prom king and queen, and raised funds to support the organization’s mission.

The idea for the sanctuary came about after the Goodins volunteered with a golden retriever organization and witnessed the lack of homes for senior dogs, even among highly sought-after breeds. They decided to take action and provide a safe haven for senior dogs and those with special medical needs that are often overlooked at shelters. The couple’s own golden retriever, Lucy Lu, who they fostered and helped recover from neglect, inspired their mission to help older dogs enjoy their remaining years.

Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary serves as a safety net for senior dogs by placing them in “Geezer Guardian homes” with dedicated owners who provide top-notch care until the dogs pass away. The organization supports these guardians by providing special diets, preventatives, and the assurance that if they are unable to care for the dog, the sanctuary will take it back no questions asked. This program has created a community among Geezer Guardians, many of whom are older retired individuals who share pictures of their foster dogs on a Facebook page.

The sanctuary houses around 100 dogs in personalized suites with 24/7 outdoor access, ensuring that they have a comfortable and home-like environment for the rest of their lives. The Goodins strive to create a family atmosphere for the dogs, with consistent caretakers and a sense of belonging. The sanctuary also hosts events like the Geezer Gala Senior Prom, which brings together supporters and volunteers to raise funds and celebrate the dogs in their care. The recent prom featured a silent auction and a snuggle tent, raising thousands of dollars for the sanctuary’s operations.

Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary continues to make a difference in the lives of senior dogs by providing a loving and caring environment where they can enjoy their golden years. Through their unique approach to fostering and supporting older dogs, the organization has helped hundreds of senior pups find loving homes and receive the care they deserve. The dedication of the Goodins and their team of volunteers has created a strong community of dog lovers who are committed to ensuring that senior dogs have a happy and fulfilling life in their later years.
