Two southwest bridges in Edmonton have been renamed in honor of two Edmonton Police Service officers, Const. Travis Jordan and Const. Brett Ryan, who were killed on duty a year ago. The bridges on the southwest leg of Anthony Henday Drive have been renamed after the officers, with the eastbound span named after Jordan and the westbound span named after Ryan. Memorial signs with the officers’ names will be posted at the ends of each bridge to commemorate their service and sacrifice.

The officers were fatally shot while responding to a family domestic violence call at an apartment building near Westmount Mall. The shooter, a 16-year-old boy, also shot his mother who survived with life-threatening injuries. The 16-year-old then died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation revealed that the gun used in the shooting was also used in a previous incident at a nearby Pizza Hut. The motive for both shootings remains unknown, and the situation was described as an ambush that led to the tragic loss of the two officers.

To honor and remember Ryan and Jordan one year after their deaths, their names have been added to the EPS memorial book and a private service was held by members of the EPS. Chief McFee announced that their names will also be added to the memorial at Constable Ezio Faraone Park in central Edmonton as a tribute to their service and sacrifice. Additionally, the City of Spruce Grove has announced that a new hockey arena will be named after Ryan, who lived in the community and had a passion for hockey, coaching, and mentoring young players in the city.

The renaming of the bridges and the addition of the officers’ names to memorials are part of the ongoing efforts to honor and remember their legacy within the community and the Edmonton Police Service. The tragic events that led to the loss of Ryan and Jordan have left a lasting impact on the city and the law enforcement community. The decision to rename the bridges serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication shown by these two officers in the line of duty. Their names will be forever remembered as symbols of courage and sacrifice in service to the community.
