Sen. Tammy Duckworth, a war veteran, criticized former President Donald Trump for saying that the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award, was better than the Medal of Honor, the highest military honor, because recipients of the latter had to die or be severely wounded to receive it. Duckworth called Trump “despicable” and stated that he was not fit to be commander in chief due to his disrespectful remarks towards military personnel.

Trump made the controversial comments at a campaign event in New Jersey, where he praised GOP megadonor Miriam Adelson and mentioned that he had awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom during his presidency. He stated that the civilian honor was “much better” than the military equivalent because everyone who receives the Medal of Honor is either severely wounded or dead, prompting backlash and condemnation.

Duckworth, who received a Purple Heart for her service and has been a strong advocate for veterans in Congress, emphasized the importance of choosing a leader who respects and values military service. She praised Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who has military experience and a deep commitment to supporting veterans. Duckworth contrasted Trump’s derogatory remarks towards military personnel with the care and respect that she believes Harris and Walz would bring to the presidency.

The senator defended Walz after he faced criticism for his past statements about his military service, stating that his vast military experience would be an asset in the Situation Room. Duckworth highlighted the choice facing American voters between a president who denigrates military men and women and a ticket that cares deeply about veterans and their needs. She emphasized the importance of having leaders who understand the sacrifices and challenges faced by those who serve in the military.

Duckworth’s comments reflect the ongoing debate about the treatment of military personnel and veterans by political leaders. Her personal experience as a wounded veteran adds weight to her criticism of Trump’s remarks and her support for leaders who prioritize the needs of those who have served their country. The upcoming election presents voters with a choice between different approaches to leadership and the treatment of military personnel, highlighting the importance of considering candidates’ attitudes towards the armed forces.
