The Leon County Humane Society recently provided an update on a bull terrier named Trooper, who was abandoned and tied to a fence before Hurricane Milton hit Florida. The organization announced that Trooper is now safe and recovering in foster care. They expressed their dedication to educating the public about the seriousness of animal abandonment and stated that they will closely monitor Trooper’s case. The Florida Highway Patrol shared a video of Trooper being rescued by an officer as the storm approached, showing the frightened dog being saved from floodwaters.

The bodycam footage captured the officer approaching Trooper and reassuring him with gentle words before freeing him from the fence. The Leon County Humane Society revealed that Trooper is still anxious and stressed as he adjusts to his new environment. They explained that abandoned dogs typically require time to feel safe and comfortable, and that Trooper will need time to recover from his traumatic experience. The attention from the video led to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis condemning the owners who left Trooper tied up in the storm, emphasizing that mistreating animals will not be tolerated in the state.

Despite the difficult ordeal Trooper endured, the Leon County Humane Society assured the public that they are committed to finding him a loving and caring forever home. They stated that Trooper will be put up for adoption once he is ready, but applications are not currently being accepted. The organization acknowledged that they have no information about Trooper’s life before being abandoned and want to ensure that he receives the proper care and support before being placed in a new home. They emphasized that Trooper will remain in foster care until they are confident that he is prepared for a fresh start.

The organization highlighted the long process of rehabilitation that rescue dogs often undergo, with adjustments taking days, weeks, or even months before they fully acclimate to a new environment. They expressed their commitment to Trooper’s well-being and emphasized that they will prioritize his needs and make decisions based on what is best for him. The outpouring of support and concern for Trooper demonstrates the community’s compassion for animals in need and their desire to see him thrive in a loving home. The Leon County Humane Society thanked everyone who has been following Trooper’s story and expressed gratitude for the support and encouragement they have received.
