Giovanni de Verrazzano, an Italian explorer from Florence, was the first outsider to reach New York Bay and describe it 500 years ago. Verrazzano sailed to the New World in 1524 with the hope of finding new trade routes to Asia via the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, his expedition faced difficulties, including a violent storm that damaged their ships. After his initial voyage, Verrazzano embarked on two more expeditions to the New World, exploring the Bahamas and Caribbean islands. However, during his third voyage, he was rumored to have been captured, killed, and eaten by cannibals on the island of Guadeloupe. Verrazzano’s journeys and discoveries were overshadowed by the later voyages of explorers like Henry Hudson, who in 1609 sailed the Hudson River on behalf of the Dutch Republic. The Dutch ultimately purchased Manhattan Island from Native Americans and established the settlement of New Amsterdam.
In 1664, New Amsterdam was taken over by the English, who renamed it New York after the Duke of York. Under the Constitution of the United States, New York City became the first capital of America in 1788. General George Washington was sworn in as the first president of the United States in New York City. The city became a beacon of freedom and a port of opportunity for those seeking a better life in the New World. Verrazzano’s role as the European discoverer of New York Harbor was only fully recognized in the second half of the 20th century. The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in the United States, was named in his honor.
