The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Jared Goff to a $212 million extension over the next four seasons, with $170 million of it guaranteed, making him the highest-paid player in team history. Goff’s new deal comes after leading the team to an NFC title game appearance and a historic season. He will be making $53 million per season on this extension, making him the second highest-paid quarterback in the NFL behind Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals. Goff joins his top receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and right tackle Penei Sewell, both of whom also received long-term extensions this offseason.

Detroit’s front office and head coach Dan Campbell have been working together to bring in the right players to continue the team’s positive trajectory. Goff was acquired in a deal with the Los Angeles Rams, which also involved sending veteran Matthew Stafford to the Rams. Goff’s time in Detroit got off to a slow start with a 3-10-1 record in his first season, but the team improved to 9-8 the following year with the help of star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. In 2023, with additional pieces from the draft, Goff had his best season with 4,575 yards and 30 touchdowns, leading the team to a 12-5 record and an NFC North title.

After winning 21 games over the last two seasons, the most in franchise history in any two-year span, Goff has solidified his position as the team’s leader on offense. With Goff’s contract extension now secured, the Lions can focus on defending their division title in what is expected to be a tough NFC North next season. Goff, who will turn 30 years old in his ninth NFL season in 2024, has shown that he can be the quarterback Lions fans hoped he would be when Stafford was traded away. Now, with Goff and his teammates signed to long-term deals, the Lions are looking to build on their recent success and continue improving under Goff’s leadership.
