The society argued that the woman’s dietary choice was protected by law and that she was discriminated against due to insufficient vegan meal options during her hospitalization in March and fall of 2020. The District Court in Hilleroed ruled that the woman had the option of bringing her own food or purchasing vegan options from a shop located on the hospital grounds, and therefore had not been prevented from eating vegan food during her stay.

The court’s decision was based on the fact that the woman, identified as Mette Rasmussen, had avenues available to her to ensure she had access to vegan food, either through bringing her own meals or purchasing them at a nearby shop. Rasmussen, who was hospitalized in Hvidovre in connection with her pregnancy, expressed disappointment with the court’s ruling, stating that the food she was offered was not adequate in terms of nutrition and taste. The Vegetarian Society of Denmark is considering whether to appeal the decision, indicating that they believe Rasmussen was not given sufficient options to maintain a vegan lifestyle during her hospitalization.
