Fani Willis, the District Attorney for Fulton County in Georgia, survived a primary election challenge and will now face a GOP challenger in November. Willis is leading the case against former President Donald Trump for alleged election interference in 2020. She has been under scrutiny from Republicans for her affair with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, which almost led to her removal from the case. Despite these challenges, Willis was able to defeat her Democrat opponent in the primary election and is favored to win in the heavily Democratic county that voted 73% for President Joe Biden in 2020.

Willis is currently facing investigations from Republicans in both the U.S. Senate and the Georgia state legislature over allegations of misusing federal funds intended for at-risk youth and gang prevention. Sen. Chuck Grassley and Sen. Ron Johnson have accused Willis of using these funds to purchase computers and “swag.” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan has also subpoenaed Willis over these allegations. However, Willis has denied any wrongdoing and called the investigations “predicated on false reasons.” She has criticized Jordan for what she sees as his attempts to interfere in a criminal investigation for political reasons rather than addressing issues like crime rates and poverty in his own jurisdiction.

The challenges facing Willis also include accusations of an affair with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, who she was accused of having an “improper” relationship with. In March, a Fulton County Superior Court Judge ruled that Willis could remain on the case as long as Wade resigned. However, Trump and his co-defendants are appealing this ruling in hopes of getting Willis disqualified from the case. The Georgia Court of Appeals has agreed to hear their appeal, although a hearing date has not yet been scheduled. Despite these challenges, Willis will face GOP challenger Courtney Kramer in the general election in November, marking the first time a Republican has sought the office in over two decades.

Georgia lawmakers have expressed concerns about oversight of Willis’ $36.6 million budget, with one senator likening it to the “Wild West” with little control. Republicans in both the federal and state legislature have raised questions about the allocation of funds by Willis’ office, leading to investigations and subpoenas. Willis has defended her office and criticized the motivations of those seeking to interfere in the investigation, calling their actions illegitimate and aimed at undermining her work. The upcoming general election will be a key test for Willis as she faces off against a Republican challenger in a deeply Democratic county in Georgia.
