Apple released AirTags in 2021 as a way to help people keep track of their valuable items, such as keys or luggage. Initially, AirTags could only be attached to one user at a time, but with the introduction of iOS 17, Apple added the ability to share AirTags with up to five people. This new feature allows users to borrow an AirTag from a friend or family member, saving them the expense of purchasing one themselves. Previously, if you traveled with someone who had an AirTag, you would be notified that you were with an unidentified AirTag, but now you can easily share AirTags with others through the Find My app.

To share an AirTag with someone, you simply need to open the Find My app, tap on Items, select the AirTag you want to share, and then tap Add Person under Share This AirTag. Your iPhone will prompt you to choose who you want to share the AirTag with, and once you’ve made your selection, the other person will receive a notification to add the tag to their Find My app. If you receive a notification for a shared AirTag that you don’t recognize, you can choose not to add it. This feature makes it easy to share AirTags with friends or family members while traveling or keeping track of important items.

If you need to stop sharing an AirTag with someone, perhaps because they have returned it to you, you can easily do so through the Find My app. By tapping on the AirTag, selecting the person with whom you want to stop sharing, and then tapping Remove, you can prevent them from locating your item and receiving unidentified tracking notifications. This feature gives users control over who has access to their AirTags and allows for seamless sharing and retrieval of the devices as needed.

Overall, the ability to share AirTags with others in iOS 17 adds a new level of convenience and flexibility for users who rely on these devices to keep track of their belongings. By following a few simple steps in the Find My app, you can easily share an AirTag with up to five people and prevent unwanted notifications about unidentified AirTags while traveling or using them in various locations. Additionally, the option to stop sharing an AirTag provides a way to manage access to your device and ensure that it is only being used by those who have permission to do so.
