Pork Dynasty Inc. of Texas is recalling nearly 470 pounds of fried pork skin products due to an undeclared allergen and misbranding. The impacted products contain soy, which was not disclosed on the packaging. The company discovered the undeclared allergen during routine FSIS in-plant verification activities. The recalled products include 2.5-ounce and 3.5-ounce bags of “Texarones Born in the Philippines—Made in Texas Fried Out Pork Fat with Attached Skin Spicy,” distributed to retail and dining establishments in Texas. Despite the recall, there have been no reported reactions related to the issue so far.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled items are urged not to consume them and to either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. Questions about the recall can be directed to Pork Dynasty Inc.’s owner, Wilson Gaw, at 832-606-1946 or via email at wilsonlg05@yahoo.com. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Meat and Poultry Hotline is also available for queries at 888-674-6854 or MPHotline@usda.gov. The FDA lists nine major food allergens that companies must disclose on product labels, including soy. A report from Traceone found that unintended traces of allergens were the leading cause of product recalls in 2020, accounting for 40 percent of all recalls by the FDA and FSIS.

The second most common reason for product recalls was the presence of harmful bacteria, such as salmonella, E. coli, and listeria, accounting for 21 percent of recalls. Other reasons for recalls include foreign objects in products, mislabeling, and the presence of lead in food. A Gallup poll revealed that 27 percent of Americans have had to discard or return an item due to a recall or food safety alert. Additionally, 53 percent of respondents reported avoiding buying specific brands of foods due to recalls or advisories. The presence of foreign objects like plastic or metal in products was also identified as a common reason for recalls.

The importance of accurate food labeling and proper handling of potential allergens is crucial to prevent adverse reactions in consumers. The FSIS recommends taking immediate action if an allergen is discovered in food products to minimize potential health risks. Consumers are encouraged to stay informed about food recalls and advisories to ensure the safety of the products they consume. Companies must comply with FDA regulations regarding allergen disclosure on product labels to protect consumer health. In the case of the fried pork skin recall by Pork Dynasty Inc., consumers are advised to avoid consuming the recalled products and take appropriate disposal or return measures.
