Seafood fans were warned of a recall of crabmeat products due to potential Listeria contamination. The one-pound tubs of “Crabmeat: Jumbo, Lump, Finger, and Claw meat” produced by Irvington Seafood in Alabama were distributed in Alabama and Mississippi. Listeria can be especially harmful to young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of Listeria infection include fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. No illnesses have been reported, but samples of the crab tested positive for Listeria, leading to the recall.

The decision to recall the products was made after samples of the crabmeat were tested and found to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Irvington Seafood has temporarily suspended production while the FDA and the company investigate the issue. Consumers who have purchased the affected crabmeat are advised to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Questions can be directed to Irvington Seafood during their working hours. This is not the first time the company has faced concerns over its food production practices, with previous allegations of insanitary conditions and non-compliance with regulations dating back several years.

In 2023, Irvington Seafood was enjoined from distributing adulterated ready-to-eat crabmeat after multiple FDA inspections revealed unsanitary conditions and violations of manufacturing practices and seafood safety regulations. The FDA found issues such as the presence of maggots, flies, and roaches, Listeria contamination on surfaces, and improper hygiene practices among employees. While these were allegations and no liability was determined, the company settled the suit and agreed to a consent decree of permanent injunction. This required the destruction of current raw ingredients and food products, notification to the FDA before distributing food in the future, compliance with specific measures, and permitting FDA inspections of their facilities and procedures.

Irvington Seafood faced a recall of its crabmeat products due to potential Listeria contamination, with samples testing positive for the harmful organism. The company decided to recall the products voluntarily to ensure consumer safety, and production has been suspended pending investigations by the FDA. Consumers are advised to return the crabmeat tubs for a refund, and the company is available for questions during working hours. This incident is not the first time Irvington Seafood has faced concerns over its food production practices, with previous allegations of insanitary conditions and non-compliance with regulations dating back several years.
