Thousands of Democrats will gather in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention, following President Biden’s decision to end his re-election bid and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris. The party has largely rallied around Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, following Biden’s exit from the race. The DNC has ensured no convention drama by virtually nominating Harris for president, and she has aimed to differentiate herself from Biden in areas such as the economy and illegal immigration, while also supporting some of Trump’s policies. Harris has distanced herself from far-left policies and refrained from major media interviews since entering the race.

Harris’ entrance into the 2024 race has shifted momentum, with polls tightening and her campaign raising a record-breaking $310 million in July. Democratic leaders, politicians, and celebrities are expected to capitalize on the enthusiasm for the new candidate at the DNC. The convention, which will be held in Chicago, is set to feature official proceedings at the United Center, as well as additional programming at the McCormick Place Convention Center. Over 100 ancillary events and parties will be held throughout the city. The convention will be broadcast on major news networks and streaming services for those unable to attend in person.

The DNC will feature daily themes and speakers, including President Biden, former President Obama, Vice President Harris, and other prominent Democratic leaders. Several protests are also expected during the convention, with anti-Israel demonstrators planning large rallies and marches. Downtown Chicago businesses have taken precautions against potential looting and vandalism during the protests. A wide range of politicians, labor unions, and special interest groups will be in attendance at the DNC, with notable figures such as Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten taking part.

While some Senate Democrats, including Jon Tester and Jacky Rosen, will not be speaking at the DNC due to their need to campaign in their respective states, a diverse group of Democratic leaders are expected to appear. Late-night comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are also scheduled to have shows in Chicago during the convention, with various key Democrats as guests. On the other side, former President Trump and the GOP are planning counterprogramming events during the DNC, including visits to battleground states and surrogates speaking to reporters. The results of hotly-contested races will likely influence the Senate’s control in the coming year.
