Ten prominent European cartoonists have had their work animated to promote voter turnout in the upcoming European elections from 6-9 June. This initiative is a collaboration between Euronews, Europeans Without Borders, and Cartooning for Peace, with the aim of raising awareness and supporting freedom of expression through press cartoons. The campaign features cartoons from artists such as Cristina from Portugal, Joep Bertrams from the Netherlands, and Kak from France, among others.

The European elections are crucial at a time when the EU is facing mounting criticism, threats to democracy, and pressing issues such as climate change and potential conflicts. The stakes are high, and the campaign seeks to encourage people to participate in the democratic process and combat the threat of voter abstention. The animations produced by the IDSIDE studio featuring the work of the 10 cartoonists will be broadcast on Euronews and social media platforms from 20 May to 9 June, leading up to the elections.

Cartooning for Peace, founded in 2006 by Nobel Peace Prize winner Kofi Annan and press cartoonist Plantu, aims to promote freedom of expression and dialogue through cartoons. The organization, now led by French press cartoonist Kak, is supported by the Hippocrène Foundation, the Naumann Foundation, and the European Cultural Foundation. The animated series created for Europeans Without Borders is part of a collective effort to promote a democratic, plural, and vibrant Europe.

The campaign showcases the diverse perspectives and artistic styles of the participating cartoonists, including their commentary on political and social issues facing Europe today. The cartoons address themes such as democracy, freedom of speech, and the importance of civic engagement in shaping the future of the European Union. By sharing these animations and participating in the mobilization, individuals can contribute to a collective effort to promote democracy and nurture a sense of European unity.

Through the power of animation and cartoons, the campaign aims to engage a wider audience and inspire people to reflect on the value of democracy and civic participation. By bringing together the creativity and expertise of renowned cartoonists from across Europe, the initiative highlights the role of art in raising awareness and sparking conversations about pressing issues that affect the continent. This collaborative effort serves as a reminder of the importance of active citizenship and the potential for positive change through collective action.

As the European elections approach, it is essential for each individual to take part in the campaign by sharing the animated cartoons and encouraging others to vote. By supporting a democratic, plural, and vibrant Europe, everyone can contribute to the promotion of freedom of expression and the protection of democratic values. The initiative serves as a call to action for citizens to actively participate in shaping the future of Europe through their engagement in the electoral process and their support for the principles of democracy and unity.
