A California man named Son Nguyen was recently arrested after allegedly attempting to steal cash from two ATMs using explosives. Nguyen, 44, was charged with two counts of damaging property following the incidents. The first attempt took place on June 8 at an ATM outside California Coast Credit Union in San Diego, where Nguyen was captured on surveillance footage taking a container and inserting a hose into the machine before an explosion occurred. Despite his efforts, Nguyen was unable to obtain any cash from the ATM.

Nguyen’s second attempt occurred a few weeks later on June 28 at an ATM outside a First Citizens Bank branch in Rancho Bernardo, also in San Diego. Once again, he was seen on surveillance video using explosives in an unsuccessful attempt to steal money from the machine. This time, the electrical components caught fire and smoke began coming out of the ATM, but Nguyen was still unable to successfully obtain any cash.

In response to the attempted thefts, San Diego Police investigated the incidents and found a white PVC pipe connected to a black PVC pipe with batteries taped to it near the first ATM, as well as other pieces of evidence such as plastic pipes. Using surveillance footage, investigators were able to track Nguyen and his vehicle, leading to a search warrant being served at his home. Inside, authorities found various chemicals, explosives, a firearm, and equipment and clothing items consistent with those used in the ATM theft attempts.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California issued a statement regarding Nguyen’s arrest, expressing relief that neither incident resulted in injury or successful theft of cash. The discovery of chemicals and equipment at Nguyen’s home thwarted any potential future attempts at stealing from ATMs using explosives. The office emphasized the seriousness of the crimes committed by Nguyen and the potential danger they posed, not only to himself but also to members of the public.

Nguyen’s arrest highlights the risks and consequences of attempting to steal from ATMs using explosives. The incidents serve as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with such criminal activities and the importance of swift and thorough investigations by law enforcement agencies. Ultimately, Nguyen’s actions not only put himself at risk but also threatened the safety of others in the community. The charges against him reflect the severity of his crimes and the potentially devastating outcomes that could have occurred if he had been successful in his attempts.

Overall, the arrest of Son Nguyen for allegedly attempting to steal money from ATMs using explosives underscores the need for vigilant law enforcement efforts to prevent such crimes and protect the public. The incidents serve as a cautionary tale about the risks associated with using dangerous methods to commit theft and the potential harm that could result. Nguyen’s actions were met with swift consequences, demonstrating that such criminal behavior will not be tolerated and will be met with serious legal repercussions.
