Broadway is making a comeback with nearly all 41 Broadway venues slated to be open for performances in November, the first time so many have been active since 2018. This positive trend is a significant step in reviving a theater industry that has been severely impacted by the pandemic. The Nederlander Organization president, Jimmy Nederlander, expressed enthusiasm over the return of Broadway shows as it means work for a wide range of individuals involved in the industry, from actors to stagehands to box office staff.

Despite concerns about high ticket prices and crime in the area, Broadway saw a surge in theatergoers and box office revenue in the week ending October 24, 2023, compared to the same period in 2019 when business was at its peak. More people attended Broadway shows last week and spent more money at the box office, signaling a positive trajectory for the industry. The opening of the much-anticipated play “Tammy Faye” at the Palace Theater is expected to further bolster these numbers.

The recovery of Broadway is being largely driven by the return of tourists and business travelers to New York City, with projections indicating that the total number of visitors will be close to pre-pandemic levels. While total attendance was down 17% in the 2023-2024 season compared to 2018-2019, there has been an 8% increase in attendance since June 16, pointing to a resurgence in interest in Broadway shows. The Broadway League and the Coalition of Broadway Unions and Guilds are hosting an annual Broadway Salutes event, marking a significant milestone in the industry’s comeback.

Local businesses in the West 40s and 50s, which depend on attracting customers from nearby theaters, are benefiting from Broadway’s revival. Shelly Fireman’s Italian place Bond 45, located near several theaters, has seen a positive impact from the return of Broadway shows. Even restaurants further away from the theaters, like Gallagher’s on West 52nd Street, have experienced an increase in traffic as theatergoers patronize their establishments before or after shows.

The successful reopening of Broadway is a boon for the entire theater ecosystem, providing employment opportunities for a wide range of individuals involved in the industry. The focus on reviving Broadway has brought a sense of optimism and confidence to stakeholders, who are excited to see the return of live performances and audiences. With the anticipation of more shows opening and increased visitor numbers, the future looks bright for Broadway as it continues to recover from the challenges posed by the pandemic.
