NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre expressed confusion and skepticism regarding the deadly New Year’s Day incidents in New Orleans and Las Vegas. In a post on X, Favre questioned the details of the terror attack in New Orleans that killed 14 people and the Cybertruck bombing outside Trump Tower in Las Vegas that killed one individual. Favre noted that there was a lot of information to sift through, making it difficult to discern what was real. Many of Favre’s followers shared similar skepticism, with one user advising to believe the opposite of what the FBI says and another recommending to ignore the media.
Additional details about the two attacks emerged in the following days. It was revealed that Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the perpetrator of the New Orleans attack, and Matthew Livelsberger, the suspect in the Vegas bombing, were both Army soldiers who served at Fort Liberty and deployed to Afghanistan in 2009. Despite both men serving in Afghanistan, there was no evidence indicating that they were in the same province, location, or unit during their time there. The FBI released surveillance images of Jabbar just before the New Orleans attack, showing him driving a rented Ford pickup through a crowd of Bourbon Street revelers. The attack was believed to be inspired by the Islamic State, with more than 30 individuals injured.
The FBI recovered a black ISIS flag from Jabbar’s rented pickup truck, further supporting the connection to the terrorist organization. Despite initial concerns about potential accomplices, the FBI stated that they were confident Jabbar acted alone in the attack. Special agents from field offices across the country were brought in to assist with the investigation and follow up on leads. However, no evidence based on the men’s military service suggested a direct link between the two attacks. Both Jabbar and Livelsberger had served at Fort Liberty, but at different times, as the base housed over 50,000 service members.
Las Vegas, Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill confirmed that the men served in Afghanistan in 2009, but any potential ties between them were still under investigation. He emphasized that the situation remained fluid and ongoing, with additional resources being deployed to assist with the case. The FBI’s counterterrorism division worked diligently to gather information and uncover any possible connections between the two attacks. Despite the tragic events in New Orleans and Las Vegas, authorities were dedicated to conducting a thorough investigation and ensuring the safety of the public. Favre and his followers continued to express skepticism and confusion about the details surrounding the attacks, highlighting the need for accurate and transparent information.
