A group of five University of Georgia students, Eleanor Cart, Kaitlyn Iannace, Clarke Jones, Jane McArdle, and Molly McCollum, are being hailed as heroes after rescuing a family from a submerged minivan in a fast-flowing river in Georgia. The students, members of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, were on their way to Savannah for St. Patrick’s Day festivities when they came across the accident on the Brier Creek bridge. McCollum, who initially saw the minivan submerged underwater, knew she had to step in and help. Two of the women entered the water to rescue the victims while the others gathered supplies and communicated with emergency responders.
The family in the minivan included a mother and two young children, one of whom was about four years old and was underwater for several minutes. One of the students performed CPR on the child while another called 911. Despite the intense situation, the child began responding within a minute of receiving aid. The survivors were all transferred to a hospital and were released the next day. McCollum expressed gratitude for being able to provide assistance to the affected family, stating that they were constantly placed in the right place at the right time to help others. The five women who participated in the rescue were honored with a lifesaving heroism proclamation from the University of Georgia.

The students will also be honored at the Kappa Alpha Theta Grand Convention for their heroic efforts.
