Despite facing economic challenges due to declining demand for diamonds, the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) led by President Mokgweetsi Masisi remains the favourite in the upcoming general election. The ruling party has been in power for nearly six decades since the country gained independence in 1966. Masisi, 63, is seeking a second term and is competing against three challengers, with the biggest threat coming from the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) coalition led by lawyer Duma Boko.

Botswana, known for its stability in Africa, is struggling to diversify its economy and has seen a rise in unemployment, particularly among young people. The BDP has promised to address these concerns by pursuing new revenue streams such as processing mineral resources and developing agriculture and tourism sectors. The election will determine the makeup of parliament, with lawmakers later electing the president. Voters have expressed their desire for change and the need to address issues of employment and wage structures.

Masisi, who came to power in 2018 after his predecessor Ian Khama served the maximum 10 years in office, has negotiated a new contract with diamond giant, De Beers Group, to give Botswana a greater share of its rough diamonds. Diamonds are a significant part of the country’s exports and GDP. Masisi also lifted a ban on elephant hunting, citing benefits for rural communities, and imposed import bans on some produce items to support farmers. However, he acknowledged the downturn in the diamond market, with rough diamond sales at Debswana down nearly 50 percent in the first half of 2024.

The opposition, led by the UDC, has criticized the BDP for being in power for too long and accused it of economic mismanagement and corruption. UDC leader Boko pledged to more than double the minimum wage if they win the election. Voters are hopeful for change and a new Botswana that addresses issues of poverty and inequality. Despite the challenges posed by the economic downturn, the government remains committed to addressing the concerns of its citizens and building a prosperous future for the country.

With polls open for more than one million registered voters, the election will determine the future direction of Botswana’s governance and economy. While the BDP remains the favourite, the divided opposition presents a challenge to its continued dominance. The outcome of the election will shape the country’s economic policies, development strategies, and efforts to diversify the economy away from its reliance on diamonds. As Botswana navigates through economic challenges, voters are looking to their leaders to ensure a fair and prosperous future for all its citizens.
