The National Association of Black Journalists faced backlash when they invited Donald Trump to sit for an interview at their annual convention in Chicago. This decision drew widespread criticism from both members and prominent figures, with Karen Attiah, a Washington Post columnist and co-chair of the conference, even resigning from her role in protest. Attiah specifically cited the Trump interview as a major factor in her decision, as she had not been consulted about the decision to invite Trump to the conference, sparking further controversy within the organization.

Trump’s history of attacking journalists and his flirtation with racist elements of his supporters made his appearance at the NABJ conference particularly contentious. April Ryan, a veteran White House correspondent and past NABJ journalist of the year, condemned the decision to host Trump, stating that it was an affront to the organization’s values and a disregard for the Black women journalists who have faced attacks from Trump. Despite the backlash, not all members were in agreement, with some arguing that it was their job as journalists to ask tough questions of political candidates, including Trump, regardless of his controversial rhetoric.

While Trump’s attendance at the NABJ as a presidential candidate was not unprecedented, the decision to host him in the context of his past behavior raised concerns among members. The organization stated that the Q&A with Trump would focus on pressing issues facing the Black community, but did not respond to requests for comment on the controversy. Additionally, the NABJ faced further criticism for rejecting requests from the Kamala Harris campaign to make accommodations for her to address the conference, despite efforts to find alternative options for her participation.

The rejection of Harris’s request to address the conference virtually or at a later date further fueled the controversy surrounding the NABJ’s decision to host Trump. A person familiar with the matter stated that Harris’s campaign had worked closely with NABJ leadership to find a solution, but their requests were denied. The rejection of Harris’s request highlighted a contrast between her approach to engaging with the Black community and that of Trump. Harris and her team stressed their commitment to ensuring Black reporters have a seat at the table, indicating a willingness to work with the organization despite their initial rejection.

The NABJ’s decision to host Trump at their conference sparked a heated debate among members and the wider journalism community, with some supporting the organization’s choice to interview a presidential candidate, while others condemned the decision due to Trump’s history of attacks on the media. The controversy surrounding the Trump interview overshadowed other aspects of the conference, including the rejection of a request from the Harris campaign to address attendees. The NABJ faced criticism and internal turmoil as they navigated the fallout from their decision, highlighting the challenges of balancing journalistic integrity with ethical considerations in a polarized political climate.
