Arthur L. Irving, a Canadian billionaire and son of industrialist K.C. Irving, passed away at the age of 93. He played a significant role in growing the oil business that his father founded, most notably as the president and chairman emeritus of Irving Oil. At the time of his death, he was among the top 10 richest Canadians with an estimated net worth of US$6.4 billion, which included ownership of Canada’s largest refinery in New Brunswick and the Whitegate refinery in Ireland. Irving joined Irving Oil in 1951 after leaving Acadia University to learn about business from his father, who he referred to as the best teacher available.

Despite his success in expanding the company, Arthur Irving’s life was not without family difficulties. He went through a contentious divorce in 1980 and was estranged from his eldest son, Kenneth, who left the company in 2010 after a fallout. The family’s separation of business interests in late 2009 saw Arthur take control of the energy business, while his brothers, J.K. and Jack, took responsibility for other parts of the Irving empire. In his book “Irving vs. Irving,” journalist Jacques Poitras highlighted the emotional toll of family discord on Arthur Irving, particularly during a 2013 news conference where he stood alone despite being surrounded by admirers.

In addition to his business acumen, Arthur Irving was known as a champion of Atlantic Canada and its people. His commitment to the region was evident throughout his career, and he played a pivotal role in the region’s economic development. However, the future of Irving Oil’s Saint John refinery is uncertain as it undergoes a “strategic review” due to the global shift away from fossil fuels prompted by climate change. Irving’s legacy as a leader in the oil industry and his dedication to his community are what set him apart as “one of a kind,” according to the company’s statement announcing his passing.

Arthur Irving’s contributions to the energy sector and his role in expanding Irving Oil’s operations have left a lasting impact on the industry and the Canadian economy. His success in managing the family business and growing its presence internationally solidified his status as one of Canada’s most influential business figures. Despite the challenges he faced in his personal life, including family conflicts and estrangements, Irving’s legacy as a pioneering entrepreneur and dedicated supporter of Atlantic Canada will be remembered for years to come.

As one of Canada’s wealthiest individuals, Arthur Irving leaves behind a legacy of innovation, leadership, and commitment to his community. His wealth and influence extended beyond his business ventures, as he was dedicated to supporting various causes and initiatives throughout his life. Arthur Irving’s passing marks the end of an era for Irving Oil and the larger Irving family legacy, but his impact on the Canadian business landscape will be felt for generations to come.
