Tembi Locke, the author of the book “From Scratch,” shared details about her husband’s cancer diagnosis on the “Making Space” podcast with Hoda Kotb. Locke revealed that the first symptom of her husband Saro Gullo’s cancer was a knee injury that occurred during a yoga class in Los Angeles. Initially, they didn’t think much of it, but testing revealed leiomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive type of cancer that begins in smooth muscle tissue. Despite the grim diagnosis in 2002, Gullo lived for 10 more years before passing away in 2012.

The news of Gullo’s cancer diagnosis was life-altering for Locke, who was 31 years old at the time. She described it as a “page one rewrite of life,” as they were faced with the uncertainty of the future. Locke reflected on the shock and disbelief she experienced upon hearing the diagnosis, admitting that even now, the memories evoke strong emotions. Working closely with an oncologist, they were not told the specific stage of cancer, which led to a focus on living in the present moment and making the most of their time together.

Locke’s memoir, “From Scratch,” chronicles her early romance with Gullo in Florence, Italy, and the challenges they faced as a couple in a long-distance relationship before Gullo moved to the U.S. Their story was adapted into a Netflix series of the same name, starring Zoe Saldana. The book and series also touch on their decision to adopt a daughter, Zoela, who was 7 years old at the time of Gullo’s passing. Locke’s book explores their relationship, cultural differences, and the impact of Gullo’s illness on their family.

Leiomyosarcoma typically affects areas such as the digestive system, urinary system, blood vessels, and uterus. Locke’s openness about her husband’s illness and their journey through his cancer treatment sheds light on the challenges that many families face when dealing with a rare and aggressive type of cancer. Despite the heartbreaking loss of Gullo, Locke emphasizes the importance of cherishing the time they had together and finding moments of joy amid the struggle.

Throughout her conversation with Hoda Kotb, Locke highlighted the emotional toll of coping with her husband’s illness and ultimate passing. She expressed gratitude for the moments of closeness and presence that they were able to share, as they navigated the uncertain path of cancer treatment together. Locke’s honesty and vulnerability in sharing her story serve as a source of inspiration for others facing similar challenges, offering a message of resilience and love in the face of adversity. The legacy of Saro Gullo lives on through Locke’s book, which captures the essence of their enduring love and the strength they found in each other during their darkest days.
