In June 2020, Stefania Frost, a second-grade teacher in Massachusetts, noticed a pain in her right side after a family barbecue. After a doctor’s appointment and a colonoscopy, she was shocked to learn she had stage 3 colon cancer at the age of 36. The cancer had spread to her lymph nodes, and she underwent surgery to remove the tumor and the affected lymph nodes. Despite only experiencing abdominal pain as a symptom, Frost was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, which is becoming increasingly common in younger individuals.

Frost’s oncologist, Dr. Aparna Parikh, explained that it is not uncommon for younger patients to be diagnosed with later-stage colorectal cancer, with delayed diagnosis being a significant issue. Symptoms such as abdominal pain should not be ignored, and individuals should seek medical attention if they have concerns. Frost’s treatment involved chemotherapy, which presented challenges due to her desire to have another child. Before starting chemotherapy, she underwent an egg retrieval cycle, hoping to preserve her fertility.

During her chemotherapy, Frost experienced side effects such as numbness in her hands and sensitivity to cold. Despite these challenges, her determination to have another child motivated her to complete the treatment. Unfortunately, her attempts to conceive through implanting the embryo were unsuccessful, likely due to the effects of chemotherapy on her reproductive system. She underwent multiple cycles of infertility treatments without success, adding to the emotional complexity of her journey.

Now nearly four years post-diagnosis, Frost continues to have regular check-ups to monitor for a possible recurrence of cancer. While she is grateful to be cancer-free, she grapples with the emotional challenges of infertility and the fear of the cancer returning. Frost emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with positivity and supportive people during difficult times. She encourages others to prioritize their health and advocate for themselves if they experience concerning symptoms or health issues, urging her friends to get colonoscopies and seek medical attention promptly.

Frost’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of early detection and proactive healthcare. Despite facing significant challenges and emotional turmoil, she remains resilient and focused on maintaining a positive mindset. By sharing her experience, Frost hopes to raise awareness about colorectal cancer in younger individuals and encourage others to prioritize their health and seek medical attention when needed. Her journey highlights the impact of cancer on fertility and the importance of emotional support during cancer treatment and survivorship.
