Arzeda, a protein design startup based in Seattle, recently announced a $38 million investment round to further develop their technology that generates new enzymes for a variety of industrial and agricultural applications. The company uses protein design software to create blueprints for enzymes, which are then tested and developed in their labs. Some of their key customers include Unilever, BP, and biotech company Amyris, with Arzeda’s technology also being used in the production of stevia, a sugar substitute.

The origins of Arzeda can be traced back to its founding in 2009 by CEO Alexandre Zanghellini, who had just earned his Ph.D. in the lab of David Baker at the University of Washington’s Institute for Protein Design. Arzeda was the first company to spin out of Baker’s lab, which has since helped launch several other biotech startups in the Seattle area. The company’s co-founders also include Daniela Grabs Röthlisberger and Eric Althoff, who is now at Seattle Children’s Therapeutics.

The latest $38 million investment round was led by investors including Sofinnova Partners, Fall Line Capital, Sucden Ventures, Silver Blue, and the venture arm of W.L. Gore & Associates, the makers of Gore-Tex. Previous investors such as Bunge Ventures, Lewis & Clark Agrifood, and the venture arm of Continental Grain Company also participated in the funding round. Arzeda had bootstrapped for nine years before raising venture capital, with a total funding amount of $86 million, including a $33 million Series B round raised in 2022. The company currently has a total headcount of 70 employees.

Arzeda’s partnership with Unilever has led to the discovery of new enzymes for cleaning and laundry products, showcasing the potential impact of their technology in consumer goods. In collaboration with oil giant BP, the company develops enzymes involved in fermentation, while their work with biotech company Amyris focuses on various applications in the biotech industry. Arzeda’s technology is also utilized in the production of stevia, demonstrating the versatility of their approach to enzyme design and development.

The success of Arzeda highlights the growing interest and investment in protein design technology, particularly for applications in industries such as agriculture, consumer goods, and biotechnology. With a strong team of experienced researchers and a track record of partnerships with industry leaders, Arzeda is well-positioned to continue advancing its enzyme design capabilities and making an impact in various sectors. The company’s ability to secure significant funding rounds and establish key partnerships underscores the value of their technology and the potential for continued growth and innovation in the field of protein design.
