A pair of suspected migrants in New York City, Abraham Sosa and Christopher Mayren, recently attacked two police officers while resisting arrest. Sosa was found trespassing in a Bronx subway station and refused to provide identification when approached by the officers. A struggle ensued when they tried to arrest him, and Mayren intervened. During the altercation, a loaded firearm fell out of Sosa’s backpack, and Mayren kicked one of the officer’s body cameras onto the subway track. Both suspects were taken into custody, and the officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Sosa has been charged with criminal possession of a machine gun, criminal possession of a loaded firearm, defacement of a weapon, resisting arrest, and obstruction of governmental administration, among other charges. Mayren faces charges of obstructing governmental administration, criminal mischief, criminal possession of stolen property, and other offenses. Mayren was released without bail, while Sosa posted a $25,000 bond and was sent to Rikers Island. Despite their lack of prior arrests, The New York Post reported that the two suspects are migrants with connections to a violent drug cartel.
Law enforcement is prohibited from revealing a person’s immigration status, but sources have indicated that the suspects in this case are migrants. The police have been in contact with ICE to gather more information on their immigration status. A Bronx detective expressed concern over the presence of a member of a Mexican cartel on the streets, particularly given the dangerous nature of their actions. This incident is not the first time migrants have been accused of attacking police officers in New York City, as a previous viral video showed a group of migrants kicking two officers in Times Square.
The NYPD has emphasized the dangers posed by individuals like Sosa and Mayren, especially when they are armed with loaded firearms in public spaces. The incidents involving these suspects highlight the challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with individuals who may have criminal connections and engage in violent behavior. The officers who were injured during the arrest struggle have been treated for their injuries, and the suspects are now facing a range of criminal charges stemming from the incident. The public outcry over these attacks underscores the importance of public safety and the need for effective law enforcement measures to address such threats.
