He was 71.<\/p>\n<p>The tribute to the basketball icon came as the Dead &amp; Company opened its third week of residency at the Sphere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe music and the basketball were the exact same thing,\u201d Walton had said of his enjoyment of the band. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have a team with a goal, and a band with a song, and fans cheering because they\u2019re happy, but also to make the players perform better, faster, and to take everybody further.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following Walton\u2019s death, the band took to social media to remember their friend. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFare you well, fare you well, we love you more than words can tell,\u201d Dead &amp; Company shared in an Instagram post, saying Walton was the biggest deadhead ever and \u201can irreplaceable force and spirit in our family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walton\u2019s love for the band was no secret. <\/p>\n<p>In his 2015 autobiography, \u201cBack from the Dead,\u201d he revealed that he attended over 800 Grateful Deal and Dead &amp; Company concerts.  <\/p>\n<p>In the book, Walton said he went to his first Grateful Dead concert in 1971 while he was still in college, according to Fox Sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver 1000 shows and couldn\u2019t get enough. He loved this band and we loved him,\u201d the band said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will miss our beloved friend,\u00a0@BillWalton, deeply. Rest in peace and may the four winds blow you safely home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the original band members also shared their own personal memories with Walton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYo Bill, thanks for the ride,\u201d\u00a0co-founder and guitarist Bobby Weir wrote alongside a photo of the two.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks for the wonderful friendship, the years of color commentary\u00a0\u2014 and the Hall of Fame existence that you wore like headlights. Bon voyage ol\u2019 buddy. We\u2019re sure gonna miss you\u00a0\u2014 but don\u2019t let that slow you down\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Longtime drummer Mickey Hart said he was lucky to have known Walton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBill was my best friend. He was an amazing person, singular, irreplaceable, giving, loving. He called himself the luckiest man in the world but it was us who were lucky \u2014 to know him,\u201d Hart said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are things you can replace. And others you cannot. Bon voyage, old friend, I love you.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>John Mayer, 45 \u2014 who fills in the enormous shoes left by legendary frontman Jerry Garcia for Dead &amp; Co. \u2014 said Walton \u201chad an eye toward the truly important stuff, the stuff we already know better than to lose sight of, but often do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe climb to acceptance is steep in the Grateful Dead universe, and Bill gave me a huge lift up those stairs with his kindness, his encouragement, and his friendship,\u201d Mayer wrote in a tribute on Instagram.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe will be so deeply missed, but his approach to life will never be forgotten. I think it\u2019s pretty good advice that when times get tough, everything will be okay if you just pretend to be Bill Walton.
