\u201cI was 13 years old, and my mom and I really started the store,\u201d owner Helen Fishman \u2014 who runs the business with her brother, Mark Bodenstein \u2014 told The Post. \u201cI\u2019ve been here my whole life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fishman and Bodenstein elected to close down to take a well-deserved retirement \u2014 but not before heartfelt thanks came from all over.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe outpouring of support and memories we\u2019ve gotten in the past few days, I guess my brother and I never realized the impact we made,\u201d Fishman said.<\/p>\n
She added that Massapequa soccer great Christie Welsh, who played on the U.S. Women\u2019s National Team, even reached out with a \u201cbeautiful\u201d email on how the store impacted her own youth as a frequent customer.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been people from the past coming back, the memories, it\u2019s totally overwhelming,\u201d Fishman said. \u201cIt\u2019s just unbelievable, you recognize the names of people you knew from 20, 30 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n
The owner\u2019s memory is so vivid because in her half century of working, talking to customers was the best part of the job, she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI liked finding out, \u2018Where do you play? What do you like to do?\u2019 \u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe really care about the people. And now we\u2019re getting thank you after thank you. We should be thanking all of them for keeping us in business.\u201d<\/p>\n
