He pointed to multiple causes, noting that the number of cases has increased since the COVID-19 crisis.One of his top priorities, he said, would be examining \u201cthe relationship between digital environments and the effects that is having on young people\u201d,\u00a0with a particular focus on social media.\u00a0He announced plans to launch an \u201cEU-wide inquiry on the broader effects of social media\u201d, which will be followed by an \u201caction plan on cyberbullying\u201d.The Commissioner suggested that part of the solution could lie in encouraging more physical activity: \u201cSport can be quite an important remedy there,\u201d he said. Culture, too, plays a vital role by \u201cgiving young people the space to actually express themselves\u201d.On the cultural front, Micallef spoke about the upcoming \u201cCultural Compass\u201d initiative, expected to be unveiled later this year.\u00a0\u201cWe are a global cultural powerhouse,\u201d he said, citing the reopening of Notre Dame as an occasion for world leaders to gather, adding: \u201cCulture is an area where we need to continue to focus our priorities.\u201dAddressing youth engagement, Micallef underscored the need to ensure young people have a platform to share their views. \u201cThe views of young people contribute to taking this project from strength to strength.
