It wants to propose new measures to ensure \u201clawful access to data\u201d for law enforcement, including a fresh attempt at an EU data retention regime, which was struck down by the European Court of Justice over serious privacy concerns in 2014.In addition to giving law enforcement greater access to data, the commission wants to equip police with better technical tools and artificial intelligence. Europol, the EU\u2019s police agency, will be transformed \u201cinto a truly operational law enforcement agency\u201d, including by overhauling its mandate to cover new security threats such as sabotage, hybrid threats and disinformation, according to the draft.To strengthen border security, the draft proposal reiterates that the commission intends to triple the staff of its border agency Frontex to 30,000 and equip it \u201cwith advanced technology for surveillance and situational awareness\u201d.The commission did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
