Smith pic.twitter.com\/xSFWn9zC99\u2014 Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) March 28, 2025 <\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Calipari\u2019s] gonna be able to recruit better than anybody ever has [at Arkansas] outside of \u2018Mr. 40 Minutes of Hell\u2019 himself, the late great, Nolan Richardson,\u201d Smith said Friday on ESPN\u2019s \u201cFirst Take,\u201d adding, \u201cGod rest his soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richardson is a Hall of Fame coach who led Arkansas to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances and three Final Fours across 17 seasons with the program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 83-year-old hasn\u2019t coached since 2002, but make no mistake: he is alive.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of the show\u2019s next segment, Smith apologized and claimed that he fully knew that Richardson was not dead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am fully aware that Nolan Richardson is alive. Trust me. I apologize for that,\u201d Smith said. \u201cI don\u2019t know why I said, \u2018God rest his soul.\u2019 I know he\u2019s alive, I\u2019ve always known that. \u2026 I don\u2019t want anybody thinking I thought [Richardson] was gone, I did not. I misspoke in [hour No. 1] of [First Take] today when I intimated that LeBron did not attend Kobe Bryant\u2019s memorial,\u201d Smith said after his false claim about James. \u201cI corrected myself in [hour No. 2] when I acknowledged he was indeed in attendance. My mistake. Should not have even broached that subject. It was not my main point.
