\u201cIt\u2019s been crazy,\u201d Carter said. \u201c[I\u2019ve] been getting death threats, people calling me racial slurs [and] all types of stuff because I\u2019m missing free throws, missing shots.\u201d<\/p>\n
He\u2019s been able to persevere and scored 10 points in nine minutes off the bench in the first-round victory.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m just happy I could help us win,\u201d Carter said. \u201cIt\u2019s hard, especially when it\u2019s coming from your own fan base\u2026 It does get challenging at times, but at the end of the day, I\u2019m comfortable with who I am as a man [and] who I am as a basketball player.\u201d<\/p>\n
But the senior added that not everyone can take it.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you\u2019re a little kid and not mentally strong, it can mess you up,\u201d Carter said. \u201cBut I feel like I try to approach it like a grown man.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carter\u2019s head coach at Texas A&M, Buzz Williams, said he\u2019s addressed this issue with his players.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been a topic that has been more prevalent than ever in my career,\u201d Williams told reporters. \u201cBut I have spent more time with our players on their reaction of others than I ever have. I think that\u2019s probably what comes with this now, the opinion of others seems to influence so much of decision-making.\u201d<\/p>\n

And he made it clear it\u2019s impacted more than just Carter this season.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve tried to handle that right with Jace\u2019s dad [and] Jace\u2019s mom,\u2019\u2019\u00a0Williams said. \u201cJust so that you don\u2019t think that it\u2019s [only] Jace, that conversation has happened with multiple players within our organization multiple times\u2026 That\u2019s why I\u2019ve kind of quit social media. Just because of the things that were coming towards me. It\u2019s just dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n
Williams knows, though, that it\u2019s not that simple for his players.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think when you\u2019re 22 and you\u2019ve grown up with a screen, you can\u2019t tell \u2019em, \u2018Don\u2019t look,’\u201d said Williams, whose team faced Michigan on Saturday. \u201cBut you have to try to find ways to educate them on how to handle it. I think the thing that bothers our group, and all groups, is when it\u2019s coming from what they think are on the inside. I think that\u2019s where their heart posture changes, like, \u2018I thought they were cheering for us.\u2019 \u2026 I think because we\u2019ve tried to handle it in a very open way, our guys feel comfortable talking to me about it.
