Once he got to that point, we just knew we could just keep winning,\u201d senior Matthew Babino told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>For him and Leary, this isn\u2019t their first time in major games, however. <\/p>\n<p>Last November they were on Carle Place\u2019s state championship soccer team and are carrying over some lessons on longevity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really didn\u2019t need to talk about it,\u201d Babino said. \u201cWe knew we were just going to put our heads back down and keep working for basketball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore Mario Dalessandro, who has taken a leading role on varsity, is taking in every moment ahead of the final four.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of crazy, I\u2019ve never been in the playoffs before in any sports, really,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is just my first experience of playing meaningful basketball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saving the day<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been quite a few days at Wantagh High School.<\/p>\n<p>The girls basketball team won its first A class Long Island title with a 54-30 victory over Mount Sinai Monday. <\/p>\n<p>It came just hours after athletic director Jennifer Keane helped resuscitate referee and longtime friend Joe Gaskin at a boys title game on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The awe-inspiring moment isn\u2019t lost on anyone, but coach Stan Bujacich said the 22-2 team is focused on the job at hand \u2014 a matchup with Albany Academy Friday afternoon at Troy\u2019s Hudson Valley Community College.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not your regular week \u2026 it\u2019s all fun, but we\u2019re preparing and are in a good mode right now,\u201d he told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just think us as continuing to get battle tested and winning close games and beating good teams.
