It\u2019s been an incredibly special year for the 15-8 Nassau County boys team, which recently topped Mattituck 53-36 for the LI Class B title and will take on Woodlands High School of Westchester on Saturday morning at Binghampton\u2019s\u00a0Visions Veterans Memorial Arena.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve created a bond, like were this little family,\u201d junior guard Ryan Leary told The Post. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to lose now.\u201d<\/p>\n
The first good omen for their best season since 2005 came in late December, when Leary notched his 1,000th career point \u2014 following all three of his sisters and even his mom in the elite feat.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe tried to keep feeding off of that. Once he got to that point, we just knew we could just keep winning,\u201d senior Matthew Babino told The Post.<\/p>\n
For him and Leary, this isn\u2019t their first time in major games, however. <\/p>\n
Last November they were on Carle Place\u2019s state championship soccer team and are carrying over some lessons on longevity.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe really didn\u2019t need to talk about it,\u201d Babino said. \u201cWe knew we were just going to put our heads back down and keep working for basketball.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sophomore Mario Dalessandro, who has taken a leading role on varsity, is taking in every moment ahead of the final four.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s kind of crazy, I\u2019ve never been in the playoffs before in any sports, really,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is just my first experience of playing meaningful basketball.\u201d<\/p>\n

The girls basketball team won its first A class Long Island title with a 54-30 victory over Mount Sinai Monday. <\/p>\n
It came just hours after athletic director Jennifer Keane helped resuscitate referee and longtime friend Joe Gaskin at a boys title game on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The awe-inspiring moment isn\u2019t lost on anyone, but coach Stan Bujacich said the 22-2 team is focused on the job at hand \u2014 a matchup with Albany Academy Friday afternoon at Troy\u2019s Hudson Valley Community College.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not your regular week \u2026 it\u2019s all fun, but we\u2019re preparing and are in a good mode right now,\u201d he told The Post.<\/p>\n
