We want to let you know, you will see Texas Tech and Kansas until they get things figured out here, the game that\u2019s playing out right now over on ESPN.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Only ABC did not show fans a different college basketball game, but rather the pregame show for the scheduled Bruins-Penguins NHL game that was set to follow the Auburn-Kentucky showdown with a 3 p.m. ET start time.<\/p>\n<p>The Bruins and Penguins game started without any switch to a college game, let alone the initial game they tuned in for.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe Bruins-Penguins NHL game is officially underway on ABC, while Auburn-Kentucky (technical difficulties for the last 30 minutes) has under 4 minutes remaining. \ud83c\udfc0\ud83c\udfd2\ud83d\udcfa\ud83d\ude35\u200d\ud83d\udcab pic.twitter.com\/XZCRxnkdE1\u2014 Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) March 1, 2025 <\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the game started, Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio reported the broadcast trouble came from a \u201cmajor technical issue\u201d involving the truck the ABC team brought to the Kentucky game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am told there was a major technical issue outside of Rupp Arena by the ABC TV truck and it lost all power,\u201d he wrote on X. \u201cTrying to find backup power now but not sure it will happen before the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Around 3:30 p.m., ESPN posted its own update on the outage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProgramming update: #NCAAMBB on ABC\u2019s broadcast of @AuburnMBB at @KentuckyMBB is experiencing technical difficulties. NHL is now underway on ABC,\u201d the post read.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the arena, referees also could not do official reviews because of the outage, LEX18 reported.<\/p>\n<p>The broadcast later resumed on ESPN News with only 2:23 left in the game, and play-by-play voice Dan Shulman clarified news about the cause of outage, saying a generator caught fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell we would like to welcome everyone back here,\u201d Shulman said. \u201cWe know we have been gone for a while now\u2026Here\u2019s what happened: a generator here at Rupp Arena caught on fire. So, first and foremost, thankfully, form what we understand, everybody is okay, but obviously that knocked us off the air for a long long time. We are back.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\tThe Auburn-Kentucky broadcast returned at 3:31 p.m. ET with 2:23 remaining in the game\u2026 on ESPNews instead of ABC. Dan Shulman told viewers that the ABC broadcast went out because a generator at Rupp Arena &#8220;caught on fire.&#8221; pic.twitter.com\/pBTYihFRYA\u2014 Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) March 1, 2025 <\/p>\n<p>Thankfully for fans that missed out on most of the second half, they didn\u2019t miss anything decisive that led to the game\u2019s outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Auburn was leading 68-52 when the feed crashed, and it maintained its well-established lead the rest of the way, which led to some jokes on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAuburn is beating Kentucky so badly they literally pulled the plug on the broadcast,\u201d one user wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKentucky really said \u201cY\u2019all haven\u2019t seen us lose to Auburn in this building in 37 years and you ain\u2019t gonna see it today either,\u201d another wrote on X. <\/p>\n<p>Sports reporter Rick Bozich of WDRB in Louisville said fans were owed a big apology. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cESPN\/ABC owes Kentucky fans a king-sized apology,\u201d he wrote on X. \u201cMissed first 12-plus minutes of the Oklahoma game Wednesday because A&amp;M-Vandy ran long. Now they\u2019ve lost the end of the Auburn game, so we\u2019re getting an NHL pregame show. Err ball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ESPN did issue an official statement after the game. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a freak accident, a generator at Rupp Arena caught on fire causing us to lose power and be knocked off the air as a result,\u201d the network said, per the Lexington Herald Leader. \u201cThankfully, no one was harmed on-site.
