It\u2019s like a dream come true.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Ivan Cleary is a former NRL player, a solid, dependable and cerebral fullback back in his day. But his son is doing otherworldly things on the pitch. Dominant things.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Cleary\u2019s signature Brady-esque, take-over-the-biggest-game moment came in the 2023 Grand Final, the third of Penrith\u2019s four straight titles.<\/p>\n<p>Penrith was down 24-8 to the Brisbane Broncos in the final quarter when Nathan Cleary, like Brady did in that famous Super Bowl comeback win from a 28-3 deficit to Atlanta, seized the game, tucked it under his arms and willed his side to improbable victory.<\/p>\n<p>In the comeback, he assisted on the two tries (like TDs in the NFL) and scored the game-winning try in the final minutes to secure a 26-24 victory.<\/p>\n<p>Does that sound familiar?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s way better than me.\u201dPenrith Panthers head coach Ivan Cleary on coaching his son Nathan in the National Rugby League.The Panthers play in Las Vegas this weekend. pic.twitter.com\/4atqTL1r1b\u2014 New York Post Sports (@nypostsports) March 1, 2025<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a reason why his nickname is \u201cIceman.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It seems fitting that Saturday\u2019s match is being played in the stadium that houses the Raiders, the team Brady partially owns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder pressure, Nathan is by far the best in the game,\u2019\u2019 rival coach Andrew Webster from the New Zealand Warriors told The Post. \u201cHe stands up when the big moments are on simply from his pure domination.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Cleary takes the comparisons to Brady and Mahomes in stride. He hears the pundits refer to him as perhaps the NRL\u2019s all-time greatest halfback. But he\u2019s genuinely humbled by that talk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest, Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes and those Patriots and Chiefs teams, they just seem on a different planet to what we\u2019re experiencing,\u2019\u2019 Nathan told The Post on Friday while relaxing in the team room during a break in the day. \u201cThat just feels so far away.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Cleary, though, has become a student of the things Brady and Mahomes have done to make themselves great.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really intrigued by the American game and how they go about their work,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cAny time you get to listen to Patrick Mahomes or Tom Brady speak, with the way they break down the game, I really enjoy that.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Everyone who knows Cleary speaks about his tireless preparation as a separator \u2014 along with his God-given skill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t say I compare myself to those guys; it\u2019s more striving to be like those guys and what they do in preparation for games,\u2019\u2019 Nathan said. \u201cI feel like my edge comes from preparation, which gives me confidence on game day to do what I need to do.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has exceeded expectations.\u201dPenrith Panthers star halfback Nathan Clearly talks with @MarkCannizzaro about the rugby dynasty he\u2019s built with his father Ivan and playing in Las Vegas this weekend. pic.twitter.com\/8cAFrJOHwm\u2014 New York Post Sports (@nypostsports) March 1, 2025<\/p>\n<p>Ivan Cleary calls the comparisons of his son to the likes of Brady and Mahomes \u201cnuts,\u2019\u2019 adding, \u201cHe would be very humbled by that.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNathan works extremely hard \u2014 harder every year,\u2019\u2019 Ivan said. \u201cHe definitely values all the little things, which I\u2019m really proud of.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Nathan, who extracted the importance of the little things from watching his father play, called his father \u201ca solid player\u2019\u2019 when asked about his playing days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people have said that he was a coach as a player,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cHe was kind of a cerebral guy as a player. He was a dependable player. Everyone trusted him, and he was a leader as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, that\u2019s all I wanted to be \u2014 I wanted my teammates to trust me, and if I would gain their trust and have their respect then the rest takes care of it as well.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The trust Ivan has in Nathan has earned him the leeway to skip out of Vegas on Wednesday to San Diego to visit with his girlfriend, Mary Fowler, a star on the Aussie women\u2019s national soccer team and who plays for Manchester City in the Women\u2019s Premier League.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018It will make me play better,\u2019 \u2019\u2019 Ivan said with a smile. \u201cSo, let\u2019s hope so.
