Just love to see him out there, whenever he\u2019s out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Billy Donovan starred at Providence under Rick Pitino in the heyday of the Big East in the 1980s, and the current Bulls head coach and Naismith Hall of Fame finalist said he\u2019s \u201cnot surprised\u201d that the 72-year-old Pitino has fronted a resurgence at St. John\u2019s this season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at all the situations he\u2019s taken over, it\u2019s generally the second year where his teams have made a huge jump,\u201d Donovan said before Thursday\u2019s game against the Knicks at MSG. \u201cI\u2019m really, really happy for him \u2014 one, being from New York and two, St. John\u2019s has got incredible tradition and history with their basketball program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me to see him back doing what he loves doing at the level he loves doing in a conference he\u2019s always had great admiration and respect for, I couldn\u2019t be happier for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donovan, a Long Island native, was a star guard on Providence\u2019s Final Four squad in 1987. St. John\u2019s is in first place in the Big East (14-2, 23-4 overall) in Pitino\u2019s second year at the Queens school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe loves the game of basketball.
