Under the new system, those who reach the UK illegally, including via small boat crossings, will be barred from ever becoming British nationals. Previously, they had to wait 10 years. The change comes as Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour government grapples with the growing popularity of the anti-immigration party Reform UK, led by Brexiteer Nigel Farage. Refugee charities and some Labour MPs were quick to criticise the decision, which they said might break international law. An immigration lawyer was the first to spot that the Home Office had recently altered the contents of its “good character requirement”, a document that gives immigration staff guidance on nationality applications. “A person who applies for citizenship from 10 February 2025 who has previously arrived without a required valid entry clearance or electronic travel authorisation, having made a dangerous journey will normally be refused citizenship,” the new guidance says. The British government notes that a “dangerous journey” includes travelling by small boat or being concealed in a vehicle. It does not apply to those who reached the UK on a commercial flight. The Labour politician Stella Creasy urged the government to ditch the policy, saying “it can’t be right” to make refugees second-class citizens. Meanwhile, Enver Solomon, CEO of the Refugee Council, said the move “flies in the face of reason”. “So many refugees over many generations have become proud hard working British citizens as doctors, entrepreneurs and other professionals,” he said.“Becoming a British citizen has helped them give back to their communities and this should be celebrated, not prevented. We urge ministers to urgently reconsider.” In Labour’s first seven months in office, small boat crossings have jumped by 28%, compared to the same dates the previous year. Starmer wants to reduce this number by making the journey less appealing to those considering it. As part of this strategy, the government released videos earlier this week of raids on businesses suspected of hiring illegal workers. The British government also wants to give the police more powers to target people smugglers. ADVERTISEMENTIt hopes to achieve this through the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, which had its second reading in parliament on Monday.

Summarize this content to 2000 words in 6 paragraphs in Arabic The Labour government wants to clamp down on illegal migration amid concerns about the rising popularity of the right-wing Reform UK party.
