We had to. We had to keep it tight,” Harrison said. “J-Kidd didn’t know about it, but J-Kidd and I are aligned and we talk about archetypes and we talk about the culture that we want to create, so I know the type of players that he likes without actually talking to him.

“I think when you’re aligned with your coach like that, I know the type of players he likes. I felt good about it making sense to where we’re trying to go.”

It feels quite odd that a general manager would sign off on on a trade of this magnitude without getting his coach’s opinion since, well, he’s the one who has to coach the roster.

Sure, Harrison probably understands what type of players Kidd wants on his team. He surely knows whether Kidd liked having Doncic on the roster or not. They perhaps have even talked about possible trades and what packages they would entertain for Doncic.

That’s all fine, but Kidd may have wanted the chance to voice his opinion to Harrison before pulling the trigger on such a move.

Perhaps he could have told him to ask for more. Maybe he could have informed him of how much this move may be hated. Or perhaps he could have said he does not approve.

Kidd, like Harrison mentioned, said the two are in agreement on roster-building philosophies.

“It’s something that as Nico brought up, we are aligned,” Kidd said. “When you look at the vision of the team and what Nico wants to build, I truly support that and truly believe that the players we are getting are the ones that can help us achieve that and that’s to win a championship.”

The pair’s joint press conference Sunday made it clear that they — at least publicly — believe Davis’ two-way skills will fit better with their roster better than Doncic’s all-offense, no-defense approach.

The Mavericks also have high hopes for how Max Christie will help with that defensive focus.

Those two, plus the 2029 first-round pick, are going to have to contribute now and in the future for the Mavericks or Harrison and Kidd may be polishing their résumés.

And at least for Kidd, he can add the note that he had no say in the deal.

“J-Kidd and I, we’ve had a vision and the culture that we want to create since we’ve been here and the players that we’re bringing in, we believe exemplify that,” Harrison said. “We think defense wins championships and we’re bringing in one of the best two-way players in the league.

“We feel we’re built to win now as well as in the future.”

Summarize this content to 2000 words in 6 paragraphs in Arabic If the Luka Doncic trade backfires on the Mavericks, Jason Kidd has his alibi.
