He literally doesn&#8217;t say a word before he&#8217;s tossed by home plate umpire Emil Jimenez, who is a second-year ump. pic.twitter.com\/sahRKUz32f\u2014 Bobby Blanco (@Bobby_Blanco) June 13, 2024<\/p>\n<p>Thomas appeared to momentarily look in the direction of the second-year umpire after the questionable strike call on a 2-2 pitch from Detroit starter Casey Mize.<\/p>\n<p>Jimenez\u2019s bizarre call was slammed by the Nationals\u2019 broadcast team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe literally have video and voice audio,\u201d Nationals announcer and ex-MLB infielder Kevin Frandsen fumed. \u201cHe never said anything that, that\u2019s just bad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes me even more mad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas,\u00a0who went 1-for-3 in the game before getting tossed, said after the game that he never made any remarks toward the umpire and labeled the ordeal as \u201cfrustrating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking back, what I said was nothing that I haven\u2019t said in the past and I thought it was a little quick,\u201d Thomas said, according to the Washington Post. \u201cI definitely didn\u2019t say anything toward him. So that was the frustrating part for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 28-year-old Thomas has appeared in 39 games with Washington this season, slashing .225\/.292\/.338 with four home runs and 18 RBIs.<\/p>\n<p>Controversial ejections and run-ins with umpires have been a recurring theme this year \u2014 ironically in the same season where arguably the game\u2019s most controversial umpire, Angel Hernandez, retired after 33 seasons.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos told umpire Derek Thomas to \u2018f\u2013king speak up\u2018 over a misunderstanding involving a pitch clock violation. <\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, he was not ejected over the exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper was not so lucky in late May when he was tossed by umpire Brian Walsh after a seemingly cordial discussion over a called third strike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, I feel like John Tumpane, Alan Porter, Pat Hoberg, even Vic [Carapazza] at second tonight, there\u2019s professionals in this league and there\u2019s guys that are really good at their job and they understand it,\u201d Harper\u00a0said to reporters after that game before referencing the number that Walsh was wearing. \u201cI guess 120 didn\u2019t understand it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aaron Boone was ejected just minutes into a late April game after a fan in the stands said something in the direction of umpire Hunter Wendelstedt \u2014 who had exchanged words with the Yankees skipper.<\/p>\n<p>An incensed Boone pleaded his case that a fan behind the dugout said something, but it fell on deaf ears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t care who said it. You\u2019re gone!\u201d Wendelstedt replied.<\/p>\n<p>Not even Yankees captain Aaron Judge was spared.<\/p>\n<p>He got an early hook from umpire Ryan Blakney in early May after he voiced displeasure over a called third strike, referring to the call as \u2018bulls\u2013t\u2019 on his way back to the dugout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery surprised,\u201d Judge said of the ejection. \u201c\u201cI\u2019ve said a lot worse.
