Fans will hear a new voice when watching ABC’s NBA Finals broadcasts this season as Richard Jefferson will fill the vacancy next to Mike Breen and Doris Burke that JJ Redick left.

Redick assumed the role when Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson were let go after the 2023 season and one of their replacements, Doc Rivers, later left for the Milwaukee Bucks head coaching job.

With Redick now coaching the Los Angeles Lakers, Jefferson will step in alongside Breen and Burke.

Jefferson will be the rookie next to Burke and Breen, as Burke was brought on as a game analyst for the first time in last season’s finals while Breen will be calling his 20th consecutive championship series this season.

The new trio will be on ESPN and ABC calling the NBA Finals, the Western Conference Finals and marquee games throughout the regular season and playoffs. Jefferson has been working with Breen and Burke throughout the current regular season.

Jefferson first took a job with ESPN in 2019 as an NBA analyst after he retired in 2018 after a 17-year playing career.

Jefferson notably spent seven seasons with the New Jersey Nets, where he averaged 17.4 points per game. He bounced around the league in the waning years of his career and won a championship in 2016 with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Since being brought on in 2019, Jefferson has been a studio analyst for “NBA Today,” editions of “NBA Countdown” and began calling games consistently in the 2023 season.

Jefferson’s new role is not guaranteed to be long-term as his contract expires at the end of this season.

He has also broadcast for the Brooklyn Nets alongside Ian Eagle on YES Network.

Eagle has been hired as Amazon Prime Video’s lead play-by-play caller, so there could be some interest for Jefferson from Amazon there following Jefferson’s ESPN contract concluding.
