The Dodgers season started without Mookie Betts — and it might continue that way.
Betts is is still recovering from a scary battle with an unknown stomach bug that has left him unable to eat solid foods.
The former AL MVP told reporters that he currently weighs 157 lbs, down substantially from the 175 he weighed when he walked into Dodgers spring training in mid-February.
“My body’s just kind of eating itself,” Betts told SportsNetLA. “Literally every time I fuel my body, I throw it up, and I don’t know what to do about it.”
Betts added that he’s unsure what to do about it and doctors have been unable to diagnose it.
He added that he is “afraid to eat” because of the mystery illness, which began two days before the team left for Tokyo.
All of his vitals came back clean, and the doctors continue to perform tests to determine what is wrong with the Dodgers’ do-it-all star.
Betts was scratched from both games of the Tokyo Series, with the Dodgers still claiming a pair of wins against the Cubs last week.
Betts was in the lineup for the first time on Sunday before being a late scratch.
“I just want to play, man. I’m tired of sitting. Tired of just throwing up. Tired of doing all of this. I just want to play,” he said.
Betts said he feels great, and he’s been able to do everything he normally does besides eat.
He added that he can drink some smoothies, but every time he eats something solid, it comes right back up.
“I just have to figure out a way to just drink some smoothies or something and just go play at 150 pounds,” Betts said.
Betts normally plays at 180 pounds, so it appears that he is in a spot where he will play 20-30 pounds below his normal weight.
If Betts is to miss time, expect Tommy Edman to man second base with the veteran taking Betts’ place in the lineup both games in Japan — going 2-for-10 and hitting a home run. Chris Taylor and Miguel Rojas could also see time for the star-studded Dodgers squad.
The Dodgers will host the Tigers in their home opener on Thursday when baseball’s regular season begins in full.
