This floundering fish is gonna cost the cheap Marlins a lot of money.

Miami designated free-agent bust Avisail Garcia for assignment Tuesday in a transaction that will cost the franchise $24,612,903, according to The Associated Press.

Garcia, 32, is in the third year of a four-year, $53 million contract signed when Derek Jeter still served as CEO, but has been one of the worst players in baseball since joining the Marlins.

There is no chance any other team will claim him and risk inheriting that bloated salary.

Jeter and the Marlins signed Garcia prior to the 2022 season in hope he could provide pop and steady offensive production to a lineup that needed some serious thump, but the outfielder instead became one of the worst free-agent signings in franchise history.

An Associated Press story from the time cited Jeter having a “key role” in the acquisition.

It’s safe to say Jeter probably wants no credit for that move any longer.

Upon arriving in Miami, Garcia immediately stopped playing baseball at a high level.

He hit .224 with a .582 OPS his first year, batted .185 with a .556 OPS last season and hit .240 with a .634 OPS this year before the Marlins ended his disastrous run.

He slashed .217/.260/.322/.582 with a grand total of 13 homers and 49 RBIs with the franchise.

Oh, and Garcia rarely played.

He appeared in just 98 games in 2022, then played in just 37 last year due to injuries. He managed 18 games this season due to injuries again, including a recent left hamstring strain.

Marlins fans had started booing Garcia, according to the Associated Press report.

“Since I’ve been here Avi’s been really great to me,” Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said. “A good teammate. Unfortunately, he had a lot of injuries. He was on the IL more than he played.”

Garcia is all but assured of being released and then teams can decide whether to sign him for the prorated veteran’s minimum of $740,000.

For his career, Garcia is a .263 hitter with a .733 OPS and a 2017 All-Star selection with the White Sox.

The Marlins (21-40) have the second-worst record in baseball entering Wednesday and could continue to be active in reconfiguring their roster, with starter Jesus Luzardo a top trade candidate.
