But one of the leading candidates to be the American League’s starting pitcher will have a chance to continue building his case on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium when Luis Gil takes the ball against the Twins — the team that traded a then-20-year-old Gil to the Yankees in 2018 for outfielder Jake Cave.
“Luis has been as good a pitcher as there is in the league,” manager Aaron Boone said Sunday. “So the impact has been enormous.”
Gil, thriving in the rotation spot created by Gerrit Cole’s injury, entered Tuesday with a 1.99 ERA through his first 11 starts.
As of Monday — Gil’s 26th birthday — that was good for the fifth-lowest mark overall among qualified starters and third-lowest in the AL, trailing only Royals right-hander Seth Lugo (1.72) and Red Sox right-hander Tanner Houck (1.85).

“He’s got the big fastball, which has always been his calling card, but he’s gotten really polished,” Boone said. “As we’ve seen here these first two months, to see him hunger to get better and learn from everything that he’s gone through, build a really solid routine, that’s what’s been really satisfying about Luis.”
In a surprise to no one, Aaron Judge was named the American League Player of the Month on Monday after tearing up his opponents.
He hit .361 with a 1.397 OPS, 14 home runs, 12 doubles, 22 walks and 27 RBIs in 28 games.
The Yankees captain capped off the huge month by relishing his first career series at Oracle Park, the stadium he grew up going to as a boy.
“This was a pretty fun weekend, getting a chance to come in here and get the sweep,” Judge said. “It was a packed house, lot of cheering, booing, whatever going on. But I loved it. I loved getting a chance to be out there. It lived up to it.”
Michael Tonkin pitched a pair of scoreless innings in relief Sunday to pick up the win.
In 10 games with the Yankees, he has allowed two earned runs across 15 innings.
