Lionel Messi is dealing with a low-grade injury in the adductor muscle, an MRI exam revealed on Monday, after it was announced that the global soccer icon would not play for Argentina in its World Cup qualifiers against Brazil and Uruguay later this month.

Inter Miami officially announced Messi’s injury Monday evening, confirming that he had an MRI earlier in the day to “assess the extent of the discomfort in his adductor region, which he experienced during last night’s match against Atlanta United.”

The exam found the injury and the team said in the statement that Messi’s “clinical progress and response to treatment will determine his availability for competition.”

Messi seemed to feel discomfort in the area during the match’s 64th minute after he missed a shot on goal in Inter Miami’s win over Atlanta United on Sunday.

Argentina announced Monday morning that Messi would not be on the final roster for the two World Cup qualifiers after he had been initially named to the 33-player roster on March 2.

Miami has been cautious with Messi’s usage this season — especially with the busy schedule — and rested him over their previous three matches due to load management, a phrase that has come to haunt NBA fans.

Messi had returned to the pitch earlier this week for Miami’s Concacaf Champions Cup match against Jamaican club Cavalier FC.

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano insisted before Sunday’s match that Messi’s absence had not been related to an injury.

“We tried to take away from the overload Messi had, so that it wouldn’t go further than that. We tried to handle it in the best way. Luckily, we were able to control it and that it didn’t turn into an injury or much more. Today he’s better and we decided to start giving him minutes. There’s no secret in this,” Mascherano said, per ESPN.

Messi played in all 90 minutes of the Miami win on Sunday and scored a highlight-reel goal in the 20th minute.

The Argentine stole a sloppily handled ball in the Atlanta end of the field, danced around a defender and then lifted the ball over a diving Brad Guzan for the goal.
