The Knicks suddenly could use Mitchell Robinson back as soon as possible.
Rookie center Ariel Hukporti suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee Wednesday night and will miss the next four to six weeks, a source confirmed.
Hukporti was making the first start of his NBA career due to Karl-Anthony Towns sitting out with a recurring knee issue.
Robinson has been working his way back from the ankle surgery he underwent last May, and it’s possible he will be available for his season debut as early as Friday’s game in Memphis, although the Knicks have not specifically announced that date as a target.
The 22-year-old Hukporti initially injured his knee in the third quarter of Wednesday’s win over the 76ers.
He returned to the game to start the fourth, but was removed after barely one minute on the court and quickly ruled out of the game with what the Knicks initially said was a sprain.
The 2024 second-round pick finished with eight points on 4-for-5 shooting with two rebounds (both offensive) and one blocked shot in 16 minutes.
Precious Achiuwa manned the center spot for the remainder of the game and came up with a key rejection against Andre Drummond in the final minute.
Towns had been listed as questionable with recurring knee soreness, but he was ruled out shortly before tip-off. Former league MVP Joel Embiid also remained sidelined for the Sixers.
Among the unsigned centers with NBA experience currently on the free-agent market are Mo Bamba, Frank Kaminsky, Robin Lopez, Jahlil Okafor, Malik Williams and James Wiseman.
The Knicks also could sign someone out of the G League, if needed.
